What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever, a serious mosquito-borne disease, is caused by the dengue virus with four circulating serotypes (DENV1-4) in Singapore and globally. This means you can be infected up to four times throughout your life.
Be aware of the potential severity:
-
First-time infections can be serious, especially for elderly individuals and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
-
Repeat infections increase the risk of severe dengue, which includes potentially fatal complications like dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.
Symptoms:
Dengue fever symptoms typically appear 4 - 7 days after a mosquito bite ranging from 3 - 14 days and can include:
-
Sudden high fever (2 - 7 days)
-
Severe headache, especially behind the eyes
-
Joint and muscle pain
-
Skin rashes
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Mild bleeding (nosebleeds, gum bleeds, easy bruising)
